Hidalgo is a state in central Mexico , with an area of 20,502 km². In 2000 the state had a population of some 2,231,000 people. The state is named after Mexican independence leader Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The state capital is Pachuca . Also in the state of Hidalgo is the town and ancient Toltec ruins of Tula .
